Iron and Steel Institute of Z. I. Nekrasov of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine: scientific achievements and paths of strategic development

Abstract

The article summarizes the results of the activities of the Iron and Steel Institute of Z. I. Nekrasov National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the context of modern challenges, in particular martial law, significant transformation of the economy and industry, and the need to integrate into the European Research Area. It is proven that despite the difficult operating conditions in 2019-2025, the Institute managed to maintain its scientific potential, ensure a high level of fundamental and applied research, and receive high marks for its activities – according to the results of the state certification of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the assessment of the NAS of Ukraine, the Institute received the highest category «A». The new system of assessment of scientific institutions, introduced by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, which combines quantitative indicators and expert assessment, is analyzed, its advantages and disadvantages are identified. The impact of the certification results on the size and distribution of funding, organizational development, and international competitiveness of the Institute is highlighted. It is noted that one of the features of the certification of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is bringing its results to the level of specific scientific units. The main scientific achievements of the Institute in recent years in key areas of metallurgy are presented: blast furnace production, non-furnace processing of cast iron, steelmaking processes, rolling production, heat treatment, materials science, development of technological equipment and control systems. Particular attention is paid to developments aimed at increasing energy efficiency, decarbonization of ferrous metallurgy, creation of new materials with improved properties, import substitution and restoration of the industry. The role of the Institute as a leading specialized scientific center that provides a full cycle of research in the field of ferrous metallurgy, promotes the training of scientific personnel, the development of international cooperation and the introduction of innovations into industry is emphasized. The experience of the Institute in recent years convincingly demonstrates that, provided that fundamental scientific principles are preserved and interaction with the industrial sector is strengthened, academic scientific institutions are able to effectively adapt to new operating conditions and maintain their scientific potential, ensuring the technological development of the state.
